Student Leaders Sharing Their Voices

Student Leaders Sharing Their Voices

Four up and coming student leaders had a chance to contribute to the work of phasing College and Career Academies of Akron into all elementary schools.

Harris-Jackson students Johana Dixon, Adella Miller and Kashindi Ndume, and Findley CLC student Rubina Rai spent a day of their summer vacation working with Akron Public Schools administrators, teachers, counselors, parents/guardians, and community partners. As Akron Public Schools continues the work of bringing College and Career Academies to the elementary schools, it was vital to get students' perspectives and voice as to why that's important, and what it could look like in their schools. They received a beautiful introduction from Mrs. Outley-Kelly (Director of Elementary Education) and then went to work! They took part in some large group discussion, and were then able to  spend some time discussing their thoughts with each other, with the guidance of a coach from Ford NGL and an APS teacher. Each young lady delivered an individual presentation with confidence! Their main task was to share how the recently adopted "Portrait of an Elementary Scholar" can come to life in schools, households and the community. They gave their perspective on "Social Skills," "Strong Habits of Mind," "Real World Skills," and the importance of being able to "Contribute to Society" and "Plan for the Future." They had such a great time that they shared their eagerness to continue helping with this important work with Dr. McWilliams-Woods (Assistant Superintendent, pictured with the girls).

We are so proud of Johana, Adella, Kashindi, and Rubina! They made both Harris-Jackson and Findley CLC "APS Proud!"
