Due to public health concerns from the Coronavirus, Akron Public Schools, following orders from Governor Mike DeWine this afternoon, will close for three weeks.

The three-week period begins Monday, March 16th.

The governor called it an “extended spring break” that will run through April 3rd. His announcement came during his regular Coronavirus news briefing in Columbus at 2 p.m. Thursday afternoon.

Akron Public Schools has been making plans and will be finalizing them with its teaching and support staff to provide instruction to its 21,000 students while they are out of school. Students in grades 2-12 all have portable Chromebook devices for classwork. Kindergarten and first-grade students will likely be given what are often called "blizzard bags." These are bags containing classwork to be done while they are off.

During the first week students are out of school, APS staff will work on final details for the students’ work and on a plan to provide assistance with food for students, many of whom depend on the two free meals they receive daily from APS.
